Where the median shop sits

Half of all appliance repair companies on Google have 22 reviews or fewer. That is the first number to hold onto. It means a shop with 30 reviews is already ahead of most of the trade, and a shop with 100 is in rare company: only 22.4% of listings have crossed that line, and 4.1% have passed 500.

The bottom of the distribution is crowded. 11.2% of appliance repair listings have no reviews at all. 35.3% have fewer than 10, and 51.7% have fewer than 25. The 25th percentile is 4 reviews. A quarter of the trade is, for practical purposes, invisible when a homeowner compares three shops in the map pack.

The mean of 102 looks very different from the median because a small number of multi-van operations carry hundreds of reviews each. Do not measure yourself against the mean. The useful markers are the median (22), the 75th percentile (84) and the 90th percentile (233). The shops that hold the top three map spots in a real metro almost always sit at or above that 90th percentile line.

Ratings: fine is normal, under 4.0 is fatal

The average rating is 4.4 stars and 67.4% of appliance repair companies are at 4.5 or higher. 29.1% show a perfect 5.0, which usually means a small review count rather than a flawless shop. A 4.8 does not set you apart in this trade. Count and recency do.

Where the rating matters is at the bottom. 17.9% of listings are under 4.0, and in appliance repair that number is punishing because the homeowner is about to let a stranger into the kitchen and pay a diagnostic fee up front. Below 4.0, most callers skip the listing without reading a single review. A further 10% have no rating at all, which reads the same way to a homeowner as a bad one.

The website gap

68.9% of appliance repair companies list a website on their profile. 31.1% list nothing. The gap between those two groups is the most actionable finding in the dataset: shops with a website have a median of 39 reviews, while shops without one have a median of 7.

A website does not generate reviews by itself. What the gap shows is that the owner who bothered to put up a site is usually also the owner who asks for the review in the kitchen, posts hours and answers the phone. The habits travel together. If you are in the 31.1% without a site, you are almost certainly also in the half of the trade under 22 reviews, and fixing one tends to pull the other along.

Hours, photos and the details homeowners check

92.7% of listings have at least one photo, so a photo is table stakes, not an advantage. The advantage is in what is missing elsewhere. 48.2% of appliance repair companies post no hours at all. A homeowner looking at a listing with no hours at 7 a.m. on a Saturday assumes nobody will answer, and calls the next shop.

Only 35.3% show Saturday hours and 24.1% show Sunday hours, even though a broken refrigerator does not wait for Monday. 7.9% claim to be open 24 hours, which in this trade usually means an answering service rather than a tech on the road at 2 a.m. 19.1% publish an email address, which matters mostly for property managers and warranty companies who prefer to send work orders in writing.

What to do with this

  1. Find your own listing's review count and place it against the median (22), the 75th percentile (84) and the 90th (233). The gap to the next marker is your review target for the next 90 days.
  2. If you are under 4.0 or unrated, stop every other marketing effort and fix that first. Reply to every review, resolve the ones you can, and ask every satisfied customer this week. See the reviews guide.
  3. Post hours, including Saturday if you run it. Nearly half the trade leaves this blank, so it is a free way to look more reachable than the next listing.
  4. If you have no website, get one page per appliance up before you spend a dollar on ads. The website guide lists what each page needs.
  5. Put your own call volume into the calculator to see what missed calls cost, then install a text-back. In a trade where the first shop to answer wins the job, speed is a marketing channel.
  6. Check your state's page below the tables. Review medians range widely by state, and what counts as "ahead" in Louisiana is different from Oregon.

Method

This report aggregates 15,956 public Google Business Profile listings collected from Google Maps searches for appliance repair companies across every US state, deduplicated by place. Review counts and ratings are as displayed on the listing at collection time. "Website listed" means the profile links to any URL; we classify the URL as an owned domain, a social profile, or a free site builder by hostname. Figures are refreshed monthly.
